Thank you so much for all your effort and expertise whilst tutoring *** You have really instilled a love for the Latin language, as well as languages in general, in him. I must admit, when he first suggested to me that he really wanted to learn Latin, I was quite worried as I knew it would be a subject I would not be able to help him with at all. You made my job super easy, I just had to guide him to manage his time and you did all the rest! He has returned from each exam feeling confident, which is great, we will have to wait and see if that confidence is well founded! Seeing as he wants to continue with studying history in the future, I’m sure he will be putting his Latin skills into use. He already seeks out Latin engravings on old buildings to translate. I thought I'd let you know how **** parent teacher consultation went for Latin today. Mr **** was extremely positive on ***'s progress. He feels that she may be able to do level 3 Latin exam next year, in his whole 8 years of teaching experience **** will be only his second student to reach that level! However, I can see now that he is very absorbed by it and he wants to study Latin. I did not want to ‘make him study Latin’ as this would be pointless. It is much better if he likes to do it. After just 5 sessions with Mandy I now feel a lot more confident when translating pieces. Going from having to guess most of a passage to really understanding the grammar and vocabulary of it all is my biggest improvement. About 15 students from years 7-9 have taken up the offer for a Latin club at lunchtime since September. I am amazed at their progress as they are from mixed abilities. They communicate in Latin and understand increasingly difficult texts. They are looking forward to doing their first test and achieving a certificate to show what they have learnt. Our students have responded well to Mandy as lessons are friendly and informal and she gives all the students the individual attention that they need. It has been fascinating studying a brand new subject alongside my students. It has given me an insight not only into how helpful and interesting latin itself is, but also what it is like to learn something from scratch again. Both myself and the students have found it really useful to see how latin 'fits together', and also how so much of our modern day language has roots in such an ancient one.
